Choosing UPS Backup for Security Cameras and NVRs

For a security camera system, the UPS needs to support more than the recorder. Identify the equipment required to keep recording during a power outage, including the NVR or DVR, PoE switch, router, modem, and other essential network devices. If the NVR powers cameras through built-in PoE ports, account for that camera load as part of the recorder's power requirement.

Add the expected power consumption in watts, including connected PoE camera loads, and choose a UPS with adequate watt capacity. Check the manufacturer's runtime chart for your combined load and desired backup duration. Also verify which outlets provide battery backup rather than surge protection only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a UPS keep security cameras recording during an outage?

Yes, when the recorder, camera power source, and other required equipment receive sufficient battery-backed power. Runtime depends on the UPS and total connected load.

How do I choose the right UPS size?

Calculate the combined wattage of essential devices, including PoE camera power consumption, confirm the UPS watt rating, and use the manufacturer's runtime chart to estimate backup duration.

Do I need a UPS for my router and PoE switch?

If those devices are required for camera recording or network connectivity during an outage, include them in your backup plan. Backing up an NVR alone may not keep the cameras operating.

Does a UPS also protect AV and network equipment?

UPS systems can provide temporary battery power for compatible AV and networking devices. Available surge protection, voltage regulation, waveform, and other features vary by model.
