Discreet THX-Certified Sound for Serious Home Theater
The KEF Ci160RR-THX is a passive architectural speaker sold individually for discreet in-ceiling or in-wall installation. Its 6.5" Uni-Q driver array combines the woofer and 1" tweeter at a common acoustic center, providing wide, consistent dispersion for home theater, immersive audio, music, and distributed listening systems.
As part of KEF's Ci-R Series, the Ci160RR-THX is THX Certified Ultra and is especially well suited to surround, height, Dolby Atmos, and other architectural home theater channels where high output and broad coverage are important.

Who Should Choose the Ci160RR-THX?
Choose the Ci160RR-THX when you want high-performance sound without visible floorstanding or bookshelf speakers. It is especially useful for dedicated home theaters, Dolby Atmos height channels, surround channels, and architectural stereo or music systems where wide coverage and high output are priorities.
If you need a powered speaker with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, streaming, or a built-in amplifier, this is not the right product. The Ci160RR-THX is completely passive and requires an external amplifier or compatible AV receiver.
Amplifier and Receiver Requirements
KEF recommends 10–190 W of amplifier power for the Ci160RR-THX. This figure is an amplifier recommendation, not an RMS or peak power-handling specification.
The speaker has a nominal impedance of 4 Ω, so the amplifier or AV receiver should be designed for stable operation with 4-ohm speakers at the intended listening level and channel count.
For home theater systems, amplifier capability should be evaluated across the number of channels being driven rather than by looking only at a single-channel maximum wattage specification.
Important THX Ultra Installation Requirement
KEF specifies an additional requirement for meeting the Ci160RR-THX's THX Certified Ultra distortion specification: install the speaker with a 3-liter rear enclosure and configure the AV processor speaker setting to Small.
The 3-liter enclosure is an installation requirement for that THX performance condition. KEF does not list a dedicated optional rear enclosure model for the Ci160RR-THX, so do not assume a KEF back can is included or available with the speaker.
Uni-Q and 130-Degree Coverage
KEF's Uni-Q design places the 1" tweeter at the acoustic center of the 6.5" woofer, allowing the high and low frequencies to originate from the same area. KEF specifies approximately 130° nominal coverage for the Ci160RR-THX.
This wide dispersion can help produce more consistent sound across a larger listening area, but placement, ceiling height, room acoustics, and speaker spacing still affect the final result.
Dolby Atmos and Home Theater Use
KEF specifically identifies the Ci160RR-THX as suitable for immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos. It can be used for height, surround, or other architectural channels when matched correctly with the rest of the system.
For an Atmos system, speaker quantity and placement should follow the AV processor's supported layout and Dolby placement guidance rather than simply adding ceiling speakers wherever space is available.
Open-Back Performance and Rear Volume
KEF publishes a 52 Hz–24 kHz ±6 dB frequency response for the speaker in an open-backed installation and specifies a 38 Hz–30 kHz -10 dB frequency range.
For general low-frequency performance, KEF lists an ideal rear volume of approximately 20 liters and a minimum rear volume of approximately 10 liters. These figures are separate from the specific 3-liter enclosure requirement KEF gives for meeting the THX Ultra distortion specification.
IP64 and Environmental Protection
The Ci160RR-THX carries an IP64 rating. KEF states that the speaker passed IEC testing so splashing water would have no harmful effect on the assembly, and the speaker also uses UV-resistant materials and protective finishes.
IP64 does not mean the speaker is waterproof or approved for underwater use. Installation location should still protect the rear wiring, amplifier connections, surrounding construction, and other system components from inappropriate moisture exposure.

Confirm available cavity depth, cutout clearance, framing, wiring, and any plumbing or electrical obstructions before cutting the ceiling or wall.
Universal KEF 160 mm Cutout
KEF uses the same 196 mm cutout diameter across its compatible 160 mm round architectural speaker family. This can make model selection or future upgrades easier when working within the KEF architectural ecosystem.
The optional KEF RIF160R rough-in frame can be used when appropriate during pre-construction. The rough-in frame is sold separately.
Grille and Connections
The Ci160RR-THX includes KEF's ultra-thin bezel design and a magnetic grille that can be painted to better match the surrounding ceiling or wall finish.
Gold-plated spring-loaded binding posts provide the wired speaker connection. Appropriate in-wall rated speaker wire is required and sold separately.
