KEF CI160CRds Stereo 6.5 Inch Round In-Ceiling Single Speaker

Product Details

Stereo Sound From One Ceiling Speaker

The KEF Ci160CRds is a passive dual-stereo 6.5" in-ceiling speaker sold individually, designed for rooms where there is only space for one ceiling cutout but you still want both left and right audio channels.

Its dual-voice-coil woofer and two separate tweeters allow one speaker assembly to reproduce a complete stereo signal, making it especially useful in bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, small bedrooms, offices, and other compact audio zones.

Key Specifications

  • Sold as: One dual-stereo speaker
  • Speaker type: Passive dual-stereo in-ceiling speaker
  • LF driver: 160 mm (6.5") dual-voice-coil woofer
  • HF drivers: 2 × 19 mm (0.75") aluminum dome tweeters
  • Nominal impedance: 8 Ω
  • Sensitivity: 91 dB (2.83 V / 1 m)
  • Frequency response: 50 Hz–20 kHz (±6 dB, open-backed)
  • Frequency range: 45 Hz–30 kHz (-10 dB)
  • Crossover frequency: 3.2 kHz
  • Recommended amplifier power: 10–80 W
  • Recommended high-pass filter: 50 Hz
  • Nominal coverage: 120°
  • Maximum SPL: 106 dB
  • Certification: IP64

Who Should Choose the Ci160CRds?

Choose the Ci160CRds when two separate ceiling speakers are impractical but you still want both stereo channels in the room. It is particularly useful in smaller spaces where a single centrally located speaker provides cleaner placement and simpler wiring.

If you have enough space for two properly separated conventional speakers, a normal stereo pair can provide stronger left/right imaging and a wider physical stereo soundstage.

How the Dual-Stereo Design Works

The Ci160CRds uses a dual-voice-coil 6.5" woofer and two separate 0.75" tweeters. One side of the speaker receives the Left amplifier channel and the other receives the Right amplifier channel, allowing both stereo channels to play from one speaker assembly.

KEF's asymmetrical tweeter island angles the two tweeters to improve off-axis separation and dispersion. KEF specifies approximately 120° nominal coverage.

Amplifier and Wiring Requirements

The Ci160CRds is completely passive and requires an external stereo amplifier, multi-room amplifier, or compatible AV receiver. KEF recommends 10–80 W of amplifier power and specifies an 8-ohm nominal impedance.

You need both a Left and Right amplified speaker channel. In a typical installation, run 4-conductor speaker wire to the Ci160CRds so both channels can be connected independently.

The 10–80 W figure is KEF's recommended amplifier range, not an RMS or peak power-handling specification.

Browse compatible amplifiers and speaker wire for the rest of the system.

No Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Built-In Amplifier

The Ci160CRds does not include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, streaming, app control, or built-in amplification. Stereo audio comes from the connected amplifier through speaker wire.

Frequency Response and System Setup

KEF specifies an open-backed frequency response of 50 Hz–20 kHz at ±6 dB and a broader 45 Hz–30 kHz range at -10 dB. KEF recommends a 50 Hz high-pass filter.

A subwoofer is not required for normal whole-home or background music, but it can provide deeper bass if the system is intended for more demanding music or TV listening.

IP64 for Humid and Semi-Exposed Locations

The Ci160CRds is IP64 certified and uses moisture-resistant fixings plus UV-resistant finishes. KEF specifically identifies bathrooms and under-eave locations as suitable applications.

IP64 does not mean waterproof or suitable for immersion. The ceiling structure, wiring, and connected electronics must also be appropriate for the environment.

Installation Dimensions

  • External diameter: 234.6 mm (9.24")
  • Overall depth: 93 mm (3.66")
  • Cutout diameter: 196 mm (7.71")
  • Mounting depth: 86 mm (3.36")
  • Supported ceiling thickness: 6–36 mm (0.24–1.42")
  • Net weight: 1.8 kg (4.0 lb)

Check joists, wiring, plumbing, HVAC, insulation, and available cavity depth before cutting the ceiling.

Optional Rough-In Frame and Rear Enclosure

KEF lists the RIF160R rough-in frame and RNC160R rear enclosure as optional accessories for the Ci160CRds. Both are sold separately.

KEF specifies approximately 35 liters as ideal rear volume and 20 liters as the minimum rear volume.

Paintable Magnetic Grille

The Ci160CRds uses KEF's Ultra-Thin Bezel design with a magnetic grille that can be painted to better match the surrounding ceiling finish.

What's Included?

  • 1 KEF Ci160CRds dual-stereo in-ceiling speaker
  • Paintable magnetic grille
  • Integrated screw-down clamping system
  • Product documentation

The amplifier, 4-conductor speaker wire, RIF160R rough-in frame, RNC160R rear enclosure, and other installation materials are sold separately.
