Episode ES-500-AW-6 Outdoor Surface Mount Speaker Pair 6.5 Inch
Product Details
Clear, Balanced Outdoor Sound for Patios and Entertainment Areas
The Episode ES-500-AW-6 is a pair of passive 8-ohm outdoor surface-mount speakers designed for patios, decks, covered porches, outdoor TV areas, balconies, and other residential listening spaces.
Each speaker combines a 6-inch polypropylene woofer with vacuum-deposited titanium and a 1-inch pure titanium dome tweeter. The weather-resistant cabinet, aluminum grille, adjustable mounting bracket, and protected speaker terminals make the pair suitable for permanent outdoor installations when properly mounted and connected.
Best Use Cases
- Patios and decks: Creates a conventional left-and-right stereo listening zone for outdoor dining, relaxing, and entertaining.
- Covered porches: Fits neatly under eaves or awnings while directing sound toward the seating area.
- Outdoor TV systems: Provides clearer and wider sound than relying only on the television's built-in speakers.
- Backyard seating areas: Adds background music or higher-volume entertainment without requiring an in-ground landscape system.
- Balconies and smaller outdoor areas: The compact cabinet is easier to place than larger surface-mount or rock speakers.
- Indoor moisture-prone spaces: May also be useful in suitable garages, workshops, sunrooms, and similar areas where ordinary indoor speakers may not be appropriate.
Who Should Buy This?
This pair is a good choice if you want straightforward outdoor stereo sound from two permanently mounted passive speakers and already have, or plan to add, a compatible amplifier or AV receiver.
It makes particular sense for homeowners who want a cleaner alternative to portable Bluetooth speakers, stronger performance than an outdoor television alone, and a speaker that can remain mounted outdoors rather than being carried inside after every use.
Who Should Not Buy This?
This is not a wireless or self-powered speaker system. The speakers require speaker wire and a compatible amplifier or AV receiver. They do not include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an internal amplifier, or a power cord.
This is also not the correct model for a commercial 70V distributed-audio system. The ES-500-AW-6 is an 8-ohm pair without transformer tap settings. Choose the Episode ECS-500-AW70V-6 when a 70V or 100V installation is required.
These speakers are not designed for submersion, installation inside a pool, or underwater use. Their IPX5 rating provides outdoor water resistance, but it does not make them waterproof or suitable for marine use.
If the listening area is very large or requires even coverage across several separate zones, a landscape system, additional speaker pairs, or a properly designed 70V system may provide better results.
True Stereo Speaker Pair
The ES-500-AW-6 is sold as a pair. One speaker connects to the amplifier's left channel and the other connects to the right channel, creating a conventional stereo outdoor listening zone.
This is different from the ES-500-AW-DVC-6, which is a single dual-voice-coil speaker designed to reproduce both channels from one installed location.
Outdoor-Ready Construction
The speakers use UV-treated, mineral-filled polypropylene cabinets, aluminum grilles and mounting brackets, and stainless-steel hardware to help withstand outdoor exposure.
The official IPX5 rating means the enclosure is designed to resist water jets from typical outdoor exposure. Proper mounting, drainage, wiring, and maintenance remain important for long-term performance.
6-Inch Woofer and Titanium Tweeter
Each speaker uses a 6-inch polypropylene cone woofer with vacuum-deposited titanium and a 1-inch pure titanium dome tweeter.
The woofer handles the midrange and supporting bass, while the tweeter reproduces vocals and higher-frequency detail. The published 65Hz-to-20kHz response makes the pair suitable for general outdoor music and television audio.
Does This Pair Need a Subwoofer?
A subwoofer is optional for background music and everyday outdoor listening. The speakers can operate as a complete stereo pair without one.
For stronger bass, higher-volume parties, or a more cinematic outdoor TV system, adding a compatible outdoor or protected-location subwoofer can improve low-frequency extension. The ES-500-AW-6 should not be expected to reproduce the deepest bass on its own.
Amplifier and Receiver Compatibility
- Speaker type: Passive two-way outdoor speaker pair.
- Nominal impedance: 8 ohms per speaker.
- Power handling: 130W RMS per speaker.
- Peak power: 325W per speaker.
- Sensitivity: 88 dB.
- Frequency response: 65Hz to 20kHz.
- Crossover frequency: 2.2kHz.
- Woofer: 6-inch polypropylene cone with vacuum-deposited titanium.
- Tweeter: 1-inch pure titanium dome.
- Connections: Gold-plated push terminals behind a weather-resistant cover.
- 70V compatibility: No built-in 70V transformer or tap settings.
- Wireless connectivity: None built in.
- Internal amplifier: None; an external amplifier or receiver is required.
Use an amplifier or AV receiver that supports passive 8-ohm speakers. Do not choose an amplifier only by matching its maximum wattage to the speaker's peak rating. Clean power, correct impedance support, proper volume settings, and freedom from audible distortion are more important.
Installation and Mounting
Each speaker includes a U-shaped mounting bracket that can be installed vertically, horizontally, or under an eave. Once the bracket is secured, the speaker slides into place and the side retention knobs hold the selected angle.
The included security screw can be installed beneath the retention-knob cap to reduce the chance of the speaker loosening or being removed unintentionally.
Mounting screws, bolts, or anchors are not included. Select hardware that is appropriate for the wall material and capable of supporting the speaker's weight under outdoor conditions.
Speaker Wire Requirements
Episode recommends high-quality 14- to 16-gauge stranded speaker wire. For outdoor runs, use cable that is properly rated for the installation environment, including in-wall, outdoor, underground, or conduit use when applicable.
Connect the amplifier's left channel to one speaker and its right channel to the other. Maintain correct positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative polarity at both ends of every cable.
Reversed polarity can reduce bass response and make vocals or instruments sound thin, distant, or poorly centered.
Placement Guidance
Position the two speakers on opposite sides of the primary listening area and aim them toward the seating zone. Keeping the speakers at a similar height and distance from the listeners generally produces more balanced stereo coverage.
Avoid placing both speakers immediately next to each other unless the goal is highly localized sound. Separating them helps create a wider listening area and more natural stereo presentation.
For a long patio or several seating zones, one pair may not provide even coverage. Adding more speakers at lower volume can often produce more consistent sound than using one pair at very high volume.
Weather and Location Considerations
- Weather rating: IPX5.
- Operating-temperature range: Approximately -4°F to 140°F.
- Cabinet: UV-treated, mineral-filled polypropylene.
- Grille and bracket: Aluminum.
- Hardware: Stainless-steel bolts.
- Recommended installation: Outdoor surface mounting with appropriate hardware and cable protection.
- Not suitable for: Submersion, underwater use, or direct installation inside a pool or water feature.
Whenever possible, mounting the speakers under an eave or awning can reduce direct exposure and help preserve the cabinet, grille, terminals, and finish over time.
Dimensions and Finish Options
- Dimensions without bracket: Approximately 7.5 inches wide, 11.1 inches high, and 7.2 inches deep.
- Dimensions with bracket: Approximately 7.5 inches wide, 11.1 inches high, and 7.7 inches deep.
- Published weight: Approximately 7.3 lb per speaker.
- Available colors: Black or white.
- Sold as: One matched pair.
- Warranty: Limited lifetime manufacturer warranty, subject to current warranty terms and conditions.
When to Choose Another Episode Speaker
Choose the ES-500-AW-DVC-6 when there is room for only one speaker location and you need both stereo channels reproduced from that single speaker.
Choose the ECS-500-AW70V-6 when designing a commercial or larger distributed-audio system using 70V or 100V amplification.
Choose a larger 8-inch Episode outdoor speaker when additional output and stronger bass are more important than compact size. Choose a smaller 4-inch model when space and visual discretion are the main priorities.

FAQ
Are the Episode ES-500-AW-6 speakers sold as a pair?
Yes. The package includes two passive outdoor speakers for a conventional left-and-right stereo installation.
Is the woofer 6 inches or 6.5 inches?
The official Episode specifications list a 6-inch polypropylene woofer. The product title should not describe this model as having a 6.5-inch woofer.
Are these powered speakers?
No. They are passive speakers and require speaker wire plus a compatible external amplifier or AV receiver.
Do they include Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?
No. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, streaming, and app control would come from the connected amplifier, receiver, or audio source rather than the speakers themselves.
What is the speaker impedance?
Each speaker has an 8-ohm nominal impedance.
What is the correct power rating?
Episode lists 130W RMS and 325W peak power handling per speaker. The RMS rating is the more useful figure for continuous-use planning.
What amplifier should I use?
Use a quality amplifier or AV receiver that supports passive 8-ohm speakers. Confirm the number of connected speakers, wiring configuration, and amplifier load before installation.
Can I connect more than one pair to the same amplifier?
Possibly, but the resulting impedance depends on how the speakers are wired and whether the amplifier supports that load. Do not connect multiple pairs in parallel without checking the amplifier's specifications.
What is the frequency response?
The published frequency response is 65Hz to 20kHz.
Do the speakers produce deep bass?
They provide supporting bass for outdoor music and television audio, but they are not subwoofers. Add a suitable subwoofer when stronger low-frequency performance is required.
What does IPX5 mean?
IPX5 indicates resistance to water jets from normal outdoor exposure. It does not mean the speakers are submersible, waterproof, or intended for installation inside a pool.
Can they remain outdoors year-round?
They are designed for permanent outdoor installation and have an official operating range of approximately -4°F to 140°F. Correct mounting, cable protection, maintenance, and reduced direct exposure can help extend their service life.
Can they be installed near a pool?
They can be mounted in a suitable poolside listening area, but they must not be submerged or positioned where they can fall into the water. Follow applicable electrical and building requirements.
Can the speakers be installed under an eave?
Yes. The supplied U-shaped bracket can be mounted vertically, horizontally, or under an eave.
Are the mounting brackets included?
Yes. A mounting bracket is supplied for each speaker.
Is mounting hardware included?
The speaker brackets are included, but the screws, bolts, or anchors used to attach the brackets to the structure are not included.
Can the speaker angle be adjusted?
Yes. Loosen the side retention knobs, rotate the speaker to the desired angle, and retighten the knobs. The bracket supports the speaker during adjustment.
What speaker wire should I use?
Episode recommends high-quality 14- to 16-gauge stranded speaker wire. Use cable with the proper environmental and in-wall rating for the planned installation.
Are the connection terminals weather protected?
Yes. The gold-plated push terminals are located behind a weather-resistant cover.
Can these speakers be used in a 70V system?
No. The ES-500-AW-6 is an 8-ohm speaker without a transformer. Choose the ECS-500-AW70V-6 for compatible 70V or 100V distributed-audio systems.
Is this the dual-voice-coil version?
No. This product is a conventional stereo pair. The ES-500-AW-DVC-6 is the separate dual-voice-coil model sold individually.
What colors are available?
The pair is available in black or white.
What are the speaker dimensions?
Each speaker measures approximately 7.5 inches wide, 11.1 inches high, and 7.2 inches deep without the bracket, or approximately 7.7 inches deep with the bracket.
What should I check before ordering?
Check the amplifier's 8-ohm compatibility, number of speaker zones, required cable length, mounting surface, available clearance, color, desired volume, weather exposure, and whether a standard 8-ohm pair or a 70V system is appropriate.
